Title: 'Waiting in the Wings'

Description: The present work is an original drawing in pen, ink and wash, signed by the artist lower left and dated (19)37. In 1937 Kestelman was commissioned to illustrate a book on the circus and he made many studies in pastel at the Bertram Mills Circus, and we believe the present work is from this series. Due to the outbreak of war the proposed book was not published. These circus paintings are among Kestelman's best work, some examples of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy in the years immediately after the end of the war. The painting is in good original condition, with some minor paint splashes to the paper at lower right, and a short crease to the paper at top right. On the reverse there are various labels including for Babbington Fine Art, then of London W14. It is housed in a simple black  frame.
