John Bellany, CBE, RA (1942-2013) was well-known Scottish painter and printmaker, born at Port Seton, near Edinburgh. During the early 1960s, he studied at Edinburgh College of Art and after gaining a travelling scholarship he furthered his studies at the Royal College of Art In London. He was elected to the London Group in 1973 and lectured on art at Croydon College of Art 1973-78 and then at Goldsmiths’ College 1978-84. His work became increasingly collectable and was acquired for many public collections and for significant private collections.  He suffered from ill health for many years. The National Gallery of Scotland held an important exhibition of his work shortly after his death.
