Born in Teddington, London, he studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art where he met his future wife and fellow artist Diana Armfield. Dunstan taught at several leading art schools and became a Royal Academician in 1968. He was strongly influenced by French painters such as Bonnard and Vuillard, using subtle colours, light and carefully observed figures in his work.
