Jacob Bornfriend (formerly Jakub Bauernfreund) (1904-1976) was a well-known painter in oil, tempera and watercolour in the European Expressionist tradition. He was born in Zborov, Czechoslovakia, and studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, 1930-1935, under Professor Willi Nowak. In 1939 he fled to Britain, losing much of his earlier work in the process, and thereafter he anglicised his name. This was the first of several shows at that gallery. He also exhibited at the Ben Uri Gallery and served on their Arts Committee during the 1960s. His work is held in a number of public collections including The Tate Gallery; Victoria Art Gallery, Bath; Ben Uri Gallery & Museum; The Hepworth, Wakefield; Leeds Art Gallery; and Southampton City Art Gallery. Jacob Bornfriend lived in London for many years.
