Michael Sandle, RA, FRBS (born 1936, Weymouth) is a well-knowsculptor, painter, printmaker and teacher. He studied at Douglas School of Art and Technology, Isle of Man 1951-54 and then studied printmaking under Anthony Gross at the Slade School, London 1956-59. He worked in Paris 1959-60 and later returned to the UK to teach,initially at Leicester College of Art 1961-63. Michael Sandle later taught in Canada for some years and subsequently in Germany, where in 1980 he became Professor of Sculpture at Karlsruhe Academy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1983 and was elected a full member firstly in 1989 and after resigning in 1998 he was re-elected in 2005. Michael Sandle is also a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and in recent years he has lived and worked in London. He has exhibited extensively internationally and has undertaken numerous public commissions. His work is held in many public collections internationally, including The Tate Gallery, Arts Council of Great Britain, Government Art Collection, Imperial War Museum, National Museum of Wales, The British Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A show of his twenty four of his etchings was held at Goldmark Gallery, Uppingham, in 1990. In 2018 the Grosvenor Museum in Chester held a major exhibition of his work comprising sculptures, drawings and prints spanning sixty years under the title ‘Michael Sandle: Monumental Rage’.
