Albert Charles Garrett, ROI, SWE (1915-1983) was a well-known painter, wood-engraver, etcher and writer on art. He was born in Kingsclere, Hampshire. He studied at Camberwell School of Art 1947-49, the Anglo-French Art Centre 1949-50, including under John Buckland-Wright, and the Slade School of Fine Art 1950-51. He was a lecturer on art, and later senior art lecturer, at the Polytechnic of North London from 1963-80. In 1958 he was elected a member of the Society of Wood Engravers and served as President of the SWE from 1967. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Albert Garrett had a number of solo shows including the Woodstock Gallery 1961, Mall Galleries London 1972, Loggia Gallery London 1977, and a tribute exhibition at Blond Fine Art 1989 and an exhibition ‘On Space and Time’, showing his etchings and engravings, held at Wolseley Fine Arts, London 2004. He wrote a number of books mainly on printmaking and artist printmakers including 'Wood Engravings and Drawings of Iain Macnab of Barachastlain' 1973, 'A History of British Wood Engraving' 1978, and 'British Wood Engraving of the 20th Century' 1980. His work is held in a number of public collections the British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Ashmolean Museum Oxford, Derby Art Gallery, the Ferens Art Gallery Hull and Hereford Art Gallery. He lived in Ruislip, Middlesex.
