Katherine Mary Fryer, RBSA (1910-2017) (known affectionately as Kate Fryer) was a Leeds born painter and printmaker, especially known for her landscapes, coastal scenes and still lifes. She studied at Leeds College of Art 1926-31, and taught art at the Bath Academy in Corsham 1937-47, and then at the Birmingham College of Art. In the 1950s she spent some time painting in Ireland, especially on the West Coast. Katherine Fryer exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy from 1956, with the New English Art Club from 1949, and also with the Women’s International Art Club. She was elected a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) and the society held a major solo show for her in 2000 titled ’One Point of View’. She lived for some years at Harborne in Birmingham, and her work is represented in several permanent collections including Leeds Museums and Galleries, Harrogate Museum and Art Gallery, the collection of the RBSA, and The University of Birmingham. Miss Fryer died in January 2017 at the age of 106 years.
