William Crosbie, RSA (1915-1999) was a well-known painter of portraits, figure subjects, landscapes and still lifes, mainly in oils. Born in Hankow, China to Scottish parents. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art 1932-35 and in Paris under Fernand Leger. His early work was influenced by Surrealism. Crosbie exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1937 and was elected ARSA 1953 and RSA 1974. He also showed at the Glasgow Institute and had his first one-man show 1939. Retrospective exhibitions were held at The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh 1980 and at Ewan Mundy & Celia Philo in both Glasgow and London 1990. His work is represented in many public collections including The National Galleries of Scotland, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art; Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums; Dundee Art Galleries & Museums; Glasgow Museums; Hunterian Art Gallery; Lillie Art Gallery Milngavie; and the Scottish Arts Council. He lived in Glasgow for most of his life.
