Stefan Knapp (1921-1996) was a well-known painter, born in Biłgoraj, Poland, and who settled in England after World War II. He was imprisoned in a Siberian labour camp in 1939 and later served as a Royal Air Force Spitfire pilot, 1942–45. Knapp studied at Central School of Arts and Crafts, Slade School of Fine Art, 1947–50, and had his first solo show at a London Gallery in 1947, then exhibited widely, including in Europe, North America and in South America. His work is represented in many international museums, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York. He lived in London, then in Wormley, Surrey.
