Artist: Michael Sandle, RA
Title: 'Rank'
Description: This is an etching with aquatint annotated as 'BAT' lower left (BAT means 'Bon á tirer' which translates as “good to pull).” This is the first perfect impression of the work and the one that was used to judge all other impressions in the edition. It is pencil signed by the artist lower right. The edition from 1985 published by Fischer Fine Art extends to 35 numbered prints. This etching is in good condition save for two small brown spots towards the top edge of the margins. The Victoria and Albert Museum has an example from the edition of 35. They comment on the print as follows: 'This image, of an athletic male swinging a hammer to a gong, interprets the symbol displayed on cinema screens showing films produced by the J. Arthur Rank Organisation. Here the cinematic icon is redrawn to underline the dynamic power of the film industry'.
The provenance of this work is the estate of the former Morley College (London) tutor and master printmaker, the late Richard Michell, who in latter years had his home and studio in Dorking, Surrey. He worked on the printing of works by a number of artists including David Hockney OM, CH, RA and Michael Sandle RA.
