Artist: Michael Sandle, RA
Title: 'Driver VI'
Description: This is an etching with aquatint annotated as 'BAT' lower left (BAT means 'Bon á tirer' which translates as “good to pull).” This is the first perfect impression of the work and the one that was used to judge all other impressions in the edition. It is pencil signed by the artist lower right and dated 1985. There are printers (?) notes in pencil in the lower margin. The print is on T H Saunders watermarked paper and has deckle edges with full margins. This etching was published in a small edition of 35 prints and is quite scarce and especially so as a BAT print. There is a crease to the paper at the lower left corner, a couple of minor stains to the margins and light foxing especially to the upper margin which will not show once the work has been mounted and framed.
The provenance of this work is the estate of the former Morley College (London) tutor and master printmaker, the late Richard Michell, who in latter years had his home and studio in Dorking, Surrey. He worked on the printing of works by a number of artists including David Hockney OM, CH, RA and Michael Sandle RA.
Size: About 9.5 x 13.0 inches plate size and about 16.3 x 15.2 inches sheet size; unframed
