Title: Portrait of a Seated Woman - An original signed drawing in red chalk; framed
Description: An original drawing in red chalk of a woman seated, circa 1930. This drawing is from a collection of the artist's work discovered in a chest after her death in 1989 and is signed by the artist with her initials lower right. The sitter for this drawing may well be Julia Strachey (1901-1979), who was the second wife of the artist Lawrence Gowing and a niece of Lytton Strachey. The work is in very good condition. There is helpful information about the artist and this particular drawing on the back of the good quality modern frame (please see the image). Another Jean Shepeard drawing from the same period is illustrated on the website of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia (in Canberra).
Size: About 8.5 x 6.4 inches image size; framed size about 17.8 x 15.7 inches
