Artist: Lewin Bassingthwaighte
History: This print, and the others comprising our online exhibition, are directly from the artist's estate and are offered in association with the artist's family. Lewin Bassingthwaighte was a highly accomplished painter and printmaker, a graduate of the Royal College of Art, who achieved a good deal of recognition in the 1960s and early 1970s. His working life was curtailed sadly by illness but fortunately he left a body of work emblematic of that exciting and creative period in time. His subjects included the landscape, still life and figures usually in an interior. In 1968 the artist wrote about his work as follows: 'I hope the work will speak for itself, but I will make one or two points. My work is about tenderness and humanity. I have used symbols such as childhood, femininity and sometimes an element of humour. In the past these might have been put under the heading of sentimentality, this I feel is a relic of Victorian thoughts. I think these ideas should be expressed very strongly in the world we inhabit today'. The original prints we have are all unframed and have been in store for many years. As a consequence some of the prints have some blemishes to the margins and/or small tears and creases. Each listing will briefly describe the condition of each print. A good number of the prints are either pencil signed or initialled by the artist whereas some are not. Each print will have the estate stamp to the reverse as an assurance of authenticity. The prices quoted are inclusive of UK shipping in a strong tube..
Title: Untitled (Blue)
Description: This colour etching with aquatint is unsigned but has the estate stamp. It is understood that the work dates to 1964 and this may well be a trial proof.
Size: About 16 x 24 inches image size and about 22.0 x 30.2 inches sheet size; unframed
Condition: The printed image is in reasonable condition with one or two light marks to the surface although on close inspection there are some tiny circular holes visible from the back of the image caused during the printing process. The print is on a full sheet and the paper away from the printed image is a little grubby with two heavy stain marks in particular visible in the upper right and upper centre margins. There are less pronounced marks elsewhere to the edges and some creasing to the corners of the sheet. No tears to the paper are apparent. The etching should present very well once mounted.
